The first step in every marketing campaign is to define your target audience. Your target audience is a set of people who you are marketing your products or services to. It involves determining some characteristics such as age, sex, location and most importantly their needs that should to be met.
In order to have successful campaign you want to have content that is relevant and useful to your target audience. You also need to do keyword research based on the needs of your audience and type of the products or services you are offering. Social media tools such as Twitter’s tailored audiences and Facebook’s custom audiences are especially convenient and great research tools.
There are several factors you need to consider while creating your marketing campaign and choosing you target audience. You need to take in account that consumers today use a lot of platforms such as personal computers, tablets and mobile phones in their daily lives, you have to take that into account and manage your audience targeting accordingly.
You can also reach consumers based on actions and behaviors such as Facebook pages they liked, websites visited, or the products they previously bought.
Demographics have been the main focus of marketers for decades. They are also very important in online marketing. When done well, demographics can tell you a lot about your target audience such as: their age, gender, ethnicities, income, marital status, if they have children, live in a house or an apartment etc. When you know these facts you can better choose your target audience and deliver your message more efficiently.
There are some useful tools you can use to help you find more consumers and target them more efficiently; one of those tools is Google analytics. You can see the type of audience that purchased from you or signed up to you mailing list. There is also info about location of your visitors, types of devices they used to access your website, websites they came from and which of your pages they landed on.
As for social media, Facebook has Facebook insights that should provide you with data concerning you audience such as their location, gender, age etc. You can also look at demographics for the people who interact with your updates and see what they liked or shared with their friends.
Another great way to find out more about your target audience, especially if you don’t have large user base already, is to look at your competitor’s website and check out their Facebook page, there you can see where their visitors come from, what of the posts are the most popular and gather useful info about their demographics that you can use for your targeting.
When you have determined your target audience next step you should do is to establish a good relationship. In order to keep users on your Facebook page or website you need to have good page with interesting content that is regularly updated.
